Principle of the Month — Dominance
|
Dominance is the arrangement of elements in a design that highlights one or more features as most important, causing the remaining elements to take on a supporting, less prominent role. A strong floral design guides the viewer’s eye by establishing clear visual importance, with the focal area serving as the central point of attention. This focal area, often the visual “anchor” of the arrangement, is where elements such as size, color intensity, texture or placement are used to draw the eye and create emphasis. By concentrating visual weight in this space — through larger forms, bolder colors, tighter groupings or contrasting materials — the designer creates a sense of balance and purpose. Supporting elements then play a secondary role, enhancing rather than competing with this center of interest. When thoughtfully developed, the focal area not only organizes the composition but also communicates the design’s message with clarity and impact.
A 24"x36" PDF poster, a worksheet and a printable of this visual are available on the TSFA Member's Only Info Hub.
|
April's Flower of the Month Club design is a round floral design. This arrangement displays an analogous color harmony. The recipe for this design is as follows:
- 3 — Free Spirit roses.
- 3 — Lily grass.
- 5 — Aspidistra leaves.
- 1 — 4”x4”x4” cube vase.
